Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation

Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation is a five-year documentary inquiry into one of the world's largest agrochemical corporations and the traces it has left on people and land. Working between photography and the archive, Asselin assembles portraits, landscapes, court files, press clippings, microfilm, personal letters, objects and the company's own advertising into a single body of evidence. What emerges is a portrait of corporate power built through images with the promise of a chemical future sold decade after decade set against what that promise left behind. The investigation follows the traces across the United States and Vietnam: in Anniston, Alabama, where PCB waste from the local plant contaminated the air and the water; in the areas sprayed with Agent Orange between 1961 and 1971; and at Superfund sites across the United States linked to the company.
